Wanting to learn journalism, she attended S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. She got in at the end of her freshmen year when they lowered the GPA requirements. After interning at the Syracuse Herald-Journal, where she discovered she was allergic to cigarette smoke (it was the '80s), she switched to a dual major in magazine journalism (less smoke) and English (why not?).
